WhatsApp keeps getting better and better. A new update for Android smartphones and tablets brings custom notifications, a “Mark as unread” feature and lower data usage.
WhatsApp version 2.12.197 is full of surprises. First of all, if you start or join a group message, there is no need to keep getting every single update every time a member says something.
You can “Mute” a group by selecting said option on the three dotted menu inside a collective message.
If you are running out of mobile data, head to the “Chats and calls” tab on Settings to turn on the feature “Low data usage”. This way your texts will consume few internet data.
WhatsApp also enables you to backup your conversations on Google Drive in case you erase your phone and what to restore your messages.

Last but not least, you can now mark a conversation as “unread” by tapping on it inside WhatsApp´s Home screen. This way you can remember to re-read a message that you jus have flagged as read.
WhatsApp likes rolling out updates to users quite slowly. If you can´t wait, you can download the APK here and start using the new features.
