Yesterday, Google updated its YouTube interface for Android smartphones and tablets to enable users to watch videos vertically.

Now iOS joins the rollout with a new version of the YouTube interface that brings vertical videos to iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

All you have to do to try the new feature is open a YouTube vertical video on Safari – give the next video a go to see it for yourself.

And if you haven’t already, you can watch this hilarious video that tries to stop people from recording vertical videos on their smartphones.

Before the update, vertical videos used to show horizontally with a black background. YouTube’s new strategy will help display vertical videos properly on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

You would think that YouTube would try to stop perpendicular recording, but the thing is that more and more people own a mobile device nowadays.

If you think about it, smartphone screens are vertical. It makes sense to take your phone out of your pocket in an upright position and start recording straight away (that is one of the reasons behind Vine’s success).
