I tried PayPal Me, an easier way to ask for money

Few months ago, Facebook allowed users to transfer money through Messenger.

All you have to do is tap on the “$” button on the low right side of the screen and enter the amount you want to send. Then tap “Pay” in the top right by adding a credit or debit card.

If you want to accept money, the receiver needs to add a debit or credit card by tapping on “Add Card” in the sender’s message.

It’s been five months since Facebook enabled payments, and now PayPal has an answer: PayPal Me.

Unlike Facebook money transfers, PayPal Me is available outside the United States. The list of places where people can use PayPal Me include Sweden, Australia, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Turkey, and of course, the US.

PayPal assures users in the Me FAQ that its new transfer service will be available in more countries over time.

More than a way to transfer and receive money, PayPal.Me offers an easy and quick option to ask for money.

It’s never nice to have to ask. That’s why PayPal.Me is the easier way to remind anyone to pay you back.

PayPal Me requires a PayPal account, and PayPal says in the FAQ that you don’t need a bank account or a debit card linked to your profile to start “using” the service.

The latter is technically right, but only if you want to create a PayPal.Me page. If you need to receive or send money you have to link a bank account and a credit or debit card.

After you log in with your PayPal details – or indeed, create a PayPal account to use PayPal.Me – you need to establish a short link with your name at the end.

In the next screen, PayPal enables you to change your profile photograph and the theme color of your page with just a click.

Now all you have to do is send your link to another PayPal user to ask for payment. Add a number at the end of your link to “ask for a specific amount”, for example “/50” without the quotations.

Your friend, colleague or family member will get your PayPal.Me profile with the money request and a link to make a payment using PayPal. You will then instantly get the money they transfer and can proceed to withdraw it – this part of the process takes 2 or 3 days and requieres a verified bank account linked to your PayPal account.

The “Friends & Family” account gets money for free, so long as the sender and receiver are in the same country while the “Business” account charges a fee.

You can share your link on Facebook, Twitter and by email on your mobile device or computer. PayPal Me can be an easier way to ask for money if the person on the other end has a PayPal account and is willing to pay you.
