As we reported in a recent article that we received our previously purchased OnePlus 2. We were interested in the improvements done to the OnePlus 2, so in this series we are putting the current flagship killer against its predecessor the OnePlus One.
In this article, we are just going to compare some pictures we snapped with both devices under different scenarios to compare the results to each other and give each device its corresponding point for each win. The device with the most points wins this round. Note that we tried our best to replicate each scenario as accurately as we could, so as to make both pictures as identical as possible.
We’ve made each picture a link so you can easily view each picture in full resolution and compare them yourself!
That being said, let’s start the battle with a close-up of a flower:
As you can see, both devices manage to capture accurate and detailed pictures with great color accuracy. Both devices do great under strong sunlight, both managing to balance out the excessive light from the sun and making the difference in white balance not very noticeable throughout the picture.
Verdict: Both pictures are almost identical to each other, thus giving us a draw!
Up next, another flower, this time a white flower!
Here the shadow appearing on the leaf directly to the right of the flower in focus appears darker on the picture taken on a OnePlus One. The OnePlus 2’s, on the other hand, manages to produce a more detailed and overall brighter shadow, making the ridges in the leaf clearer compared to the picture snapped on the OnePlus One. Aside from that, both pictures are pretty identical.
Verdict: The OnePlus 2 managed to produce more accurate shadows, thus giving it a point.
Score: OnePlus 2: 1 Point, OnePlus One: 0 Points
Now that you’ve seen some pictures of objects under direct sunlight let’s change it up and compare a close-up picture of a key!
Now things are getting interesting; we can clearly see the difference between both devices! The OnePlus One snaps a warmer and more yellowish picture while the OnePlus 2 captures a cooler and darker picture. The temperature of the pictures isn’t really important to us, so we’ll let that slide. Upon closer inspection of both pictures, you’ll notice that the OnePlus 2 was able to capture more detail and less blur compared to the picture taken on the OnePlus One. You can more easily distinguish the letters on the key and the “R” for registered on the keychain in the first picture.
Verdict: Though the OnePlus One managed to snap a great picture, the amount of blur makes some items completely indistinguishable. This gives us a clear winner: The OnePlus 2!
Score: OnePlus 2: 2 Points, OnePlus One: 0 Points
Now let’s simulate some shots an archeology museum would use!
Here we are focusing on a single element under very strong lighting. The OnePlus 2 managed to balance the contrast to give a crisper result. If you look closely at the right side of the statue, you’ll notice that the OnePlus One creates a purple haze surrounding the top right side of the head – this is not present in the picture snapped on the OnePlus 2.
The better adjustment of contrast by the OnePlus 2 gives us a better and overall more detailed picture when looking closely.
Verdict: The OnePlus 2 managed to adjust the contrast in a more balanced way to give a better-looking picture. That gives the OnePlus 2 another point.
Score: OnePlus 2: 3 Points, OnePlus One: 0 Points
This time, we are focusing on two items simultaneously while exposing one item to more light.
This is a pretty tricky one to shot for both of our devices, since they need to find a balance in contrast between both objects so not to make one of the objects appear clear while making the other one look washed out. We noticed that a more detailed photo taken on the OnePlus 2 created a strange-looking shadow on the left side of the skull giving it a more cartoonish look. The OnePlus One, on the other hand, creates a darker and more normal-looking shadow on the side of the skull while maintaining a lot of detail throughout the picture.
Verdict: While capturing more detail, the OnePlus 2 distorted the shadows and made them look odd. Shadows are really important in pictures like this, so the winner this time is the OnePlus One!
Score: OnePlus 2: 3 Points, OnePlus One: 1 Point.
OnePlus 2 Vs OnePlus One: Photo comparison
Now we are busting out in our opinion one of the classiest smartwatches of 2015, the LG G Watch R. We are exposing the watch to two different scenarios, first a very low light setting, and second, the same scenario as the first but using the built-in dual-tone LED flash.
As you might have noticed, the OnePlus 2 performs better in this setting compared to the OnePlus One.
The OnePlus One doesn’t do a very good job here, creating a lot of noise and giving us an overall grainy picture. You can clearly see the difference between both by simply looking at them and comparing them to each other. This gives the OnePlus 2 yet another point!
Verdict: The amount of noise the OnePlus One creates gives us a very poor quality picture. which is something we don’t really want even in a condition with such poor lighting.
Score: OnePlus 2: 4 Points, OnePlus One: 1 Point.
If you though the OnePlus One performed poorly in the previous challenge, wait until you see this one!
We already have a clear winner for this challenge, but it’s fun to pinpoint what the OnePlus One did horribly wrong! Let’s start off with the obvious line going through the middle of the picture, this is the OnePlus One horribly failing at synchronizing the flash with the shutter. If that wasn’t enough, the flash created a flare at both sides of the bezel on the watch giving us an even worse and even blurrier result. Note that we tried this multiple times, getting the same result over and over again. Whether this has to do with the camera application we used or the OnePlus One’s lack of ability to synchronize the flash with the shutter, will remain a mystery.
The OnePlus 2 outperforms the OnePlus One in all ways in this particular challenge, giving us a crisper, clearer, well-lit image thanks to it’s well-synchronized shutter with the flash!
Verdict: The OnePlus 2 is the clear winner of this challenge, thanks to it’s well-timed use of flash!
Score: OnePlus 2: 5 Points, OnePlus One: 1 Point.
We are going to end this competition with a required comparison of the front cameras, with two selfies taken in different conditions! Let’s start off in the well-lit condition.
In this set, there are only two things that differentiate the phones from each other, the distance at which the person (Me) appears at, and the amount of saturation in colors.
In the picture taken on the OnePlus 2, we get more vibrant reds and more deep blues. That is great for when photographing landscapes but alters the look of colors in faces and bodies giving skin a red tint. The OnePlus One, on the other hand, creates a picture that is both relatively cold in temperature and not over-saturated. The OnePlus One also captures a wider picture, thanks to its wide-angle lens!
Verdict: Although we do appreciate saturated images, we do prefer more natural-looking self-portraits! That gives the OnePlus One another point!
Score: OnePlus 2: 5 Points, OnePlus One: 2 Points.
Now let’s move on to the selfie taken in a low-light condition.
In this challenge, we can clearly see that the front-facing camera on the OnePlus One performs almost as good as in a well-lit condition, which is pretty impressive compared to the horribly noisy and grainy picture snapped on the OnePlus 2.
Verdict: The OnePlus One manages to snap better low-light pictures, using the limited amount of light to create a relatively light picture. That gives the OnePlus One another point, putting it above half the points scored by the OnePlus 2!
Score: OnePlus 2: 5 Points, OnePlus One: 3 Points.
The OnePlus 2 got 5 points; the OnePlus One got 3 points; So we have a winner: The OnePlus 2!
That was a very tough match for the OnePlus One considering the OnePlus 2 is newer and better specced. Still, the OnePlus One did its best and managed to get more than half the points the OnePlus 2 got!
Conclusion: Even though the OnePlus One was released over a year ago, it still holds up as a “flagship killer” thanks to its great specs and excellent build quality! Both devices performed really well, given the conditions they were tested. We recommend both of them since they are both great and unique devices that offer a clean and bloat-free user experience!
If you are on the market for affordable high-end devices, consider having a look at either the OnePlus One or, if you are lucky enough to receive an invite, the OnePlus 2!
