Apple Music debuted on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch at the end of June. Four months later, the California technology giant decided to release its streaming app for Android users.
You can install Apple Music on your smartphone or tablet with Android 4.3 or later, and get a free 90-day trial or sign in with your current account in case you’ve already subscribed on your Mac or PC.
Even though it took Apple a long time to release an Android version of Music, the company labeled the app as “beta”. In other words, the streaming solution may have the occasional bug that downgrades the user’s experience.
After you create an Apple ID with a credit or debit card or sign in with your email, you will get to the “For You” section, where Apple curates playlists based on your taste.
Tap on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner to access new music, your playlists and radio, as well as the music you have previously bought from the iTunes Store. I couldn’t access my previous purchases, as Apple Music prompted an error telling me I hadn’t bought any of the songs listed.
Apple Music has a feedback button where you can report any problems, like the one I mentioned above. Overall, the app runs smoothly and offers almost the same experience as in iOS, sans the pop-up hamburger menu and a playback cache limit in Settings, as well as the temporary lack of music videos and family subscriptions.
The search bar lets you look for songs, artists and albums on Apple Music, as well as your iCloud library. You can download an album or song by tapping on the three-dotted button next to it, and see the download progress on your device’s status bar.
I didn’t find any bugs other than a restricted access to my iCloud’s purchases, and I recommend the app to people who want to try an official Apple app on their Android device, as well as enjoy three months of free music.
