Yes. To my surprise, the new film and series streaming service Starz works outside the United States. And I´m glad to report you don´t need a VPN to hide your location.
I just used my American Apple ID and store credit to subscribe. After making an $8.99 in-app purchase, I created an account using an email and a password and voilá. I´m now watching Avengers: Age Of Ultron on my iPhone.
If that wasn´t enough, you get to use AirPlay and Google Cast to watch Starz´s content on your Apple TV or Chromecast, even if you´re outside America. No tricks.
I thought I would spend my last FreeMyApps voucher on something that requires a VPN to use. But now, after an expired Netflix subscription, I get to enjoy “more than 2,400 shows” on my iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. (There´s even a Starz app for Android smartphones and tablets with Chromecast support, but you will need to download it from a third party website as it is not available outside the US.)
This is what Starz had to say regarding content:
STARZ Originals in 2016 include “Black Sails,” “Outlander,” “The Girlfriend Experience,” “Power,” “Survivor’s Remorse,” “Blunt Talk,” and “Ash vs Evil Dead,” and the first STARZ Original movie, The Dresser. Exclusive hit movies on STARZ in 2016 include: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Inside Out, Pixels, Concussion, The Good Dinosaur, Ricki and the Flash, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Cinderella, Tomorrowland, The Wedding Ringer and Ant-Man. Popular movie and television programming on the new STARZ ENCORE includes: I, Robot, Fever Pitch, Never Been Kissed, 22 Jump Street, Dances With Wolves, Gone Baby Gone, Monsters, Inc., Spider-Man 3, Superbad, Total Recall, True Grit, “Magnum, P.I.,” “Diff’rent Strokes,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Gunsmoke.”
Movies played on my Moto G, iPhone and iPad, although I couldn’t find the official number of devices you´re allowed to use at the same time. They also loaded very quickly, and Starz´s overall interface was easy to use and well-designed.
Apart from the competitive price, there´s something else that makes Quartz different from its competitors: a download option. Tap on a film or TV episode, and next to the play button you will notice a download prompt. The download will appear in “My List”, a section in the left-hand hamburger menu, as well as the percentage progress and the number of days the content will be available on your phone or tablet for offline viewing.
Download speed will depend on your internet connection, and the app will let you know how much of your local storage a film or episode will use. Hint: a lot.
Like Netflix, your recent plays will appear in the “Resume” section, and you can enable cellular streaming in the app´s setting. Unlike Netflix, Starz lets you select an appropriate content rating in “Parental Controls,” in case you lend your device to a toddler.
Although Starz may have great films lined up, like Star Wars The Force Awakens, it still lacks popular series like Friends or The Office, two titles Netflix enjoys. Nevertheless, I loved the download option, as I now get to take films like Inside Out and Avengers Age of Ultron on the road without worrying about my mobile data consumption.
